With both Modeling the Molecular World sessions finished, we want to thank all the educators who attended our summer courses. Sharing ideas on enhancing student learning creates new experiences and relationships that we cherish. So, thank you for spending time learning with us in Milwaukee and spreading the joys of modeling! Our sessions thrive because curious educators like you are championing modeling in the classroom.

Science Spotlight

Kary Mullis, PhD, a Nobel prize-winning biochemist, is known for inventing polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR takes a small amount of DNA and copies it millions to billions of times over a short period. The DNA molecule's two strands separate by applying heat, then DNA base pairing occurs on each strand. With the help of the enzyme Taq polymerase, new DNA chains form, and the process repeats. While Dr. Mullis invented PCR in 1985, we still use it in DNA cloning and sequencing, analysis of genetic fingerprints in DNA profiling, and detecting pathogens to diagnose infectious diseases.
