 National Sickle Cell Awareness Month

Sickle cell disease is the most common inherited blood disorder in America, with over 100,000 people diagnosed, causing severe, chronic pain and other serious problems. Help raise awareness about sickle cell disease, how to manage it, and the available treatments by teaching students the importance of monitoring and understanding their health. Use modeling to help your students better understand genetically inherited diseases. Science Spotlight

Dr. Carter Clinton is a genetic anthropologist at the Department of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University. His research focuses on admixture mapping analysis to uncover the living conditions, diets, and diseases of African Americans from the 17th and 18th centuries. He does this through DNA analysis of the New York African Burial Ground using an evolutionary medicine analysis. Dive Into the Genetic History of Our Ancestors!

Teach your students the genetic history of sickle cell disease using the ß-Globin Folding Kit©, Map Of The Human ß-Globin Gene©, and the Chromosome Connections Kit©! Model cell mutation at the molecular level so students can see the cause of sickle cell anemia with the ß-Globin Folding Kit©. Using the Map Of The Human ß-Globin Gene©, students can discover the genome sequence for sickle cell disease. You can also relate the Chromosome Connections Kit© to sickle cell disease by demonstrating the inheritance of sickle cells using Punnett squares. Modeling with these kits can help your students understand the basis of this disease.
