Science Spotlight
The United Kingdom has recently authorized the world's first gene therapy based on a CRISPR gene editing tool. This tool, Casgevy, aims to cure sickle-cell disease and transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia, both painful and life-long conditions. Casgevy works by editing the faulty gene in the stem cells of a patient's bone marrow so the body produces functioning hemoglobin. While this technology is new, the results of this gene editing have the potential to permanently fix these conditions.
