Science Spotlight

Har Gobind Khorana, PhD, was born in India in 1922 and is known for his research on the genetic code. After growing up in India, he moved to England in 1945 and earned his PhD in 1948. He eventually became the co-director of UW-Madison's Institute for Enzyme Research in 1960 after working at the University of British Columbia for eight years. It was here that he discovered the order of nucleotides in nucleic acids. This research has helped us better understand protein synthesis and won him a Nobel Prize in 1968. While he passed away in 2011, the Khorana Program for Scholars, named in his honor, facilitates Indian students conducting research in the U.S. to promote science and technological advancements between India and the U.S.
