Meet Our Newest Staff Member!

Last week, Leah Krevitt joined 3D Molecular Designs' material development team as our new 3D Printing Specialist working on 3D printing, model design, and kit fabrication and development. Leah's educational and research background in behavioral neurobiology has shown her a wide variety of extremely beautiful data.

 

Outside of the lab, while working on curriculum development at an educational maker space, she loved sharing the beauty of that data using 3D printers and laser cutters. Leah is passionate about efficient scientific communication between people with many kinds of expertise in neurobehavioral research. She plays with Protein Data Bank models in her free time and enjoys watching wild animals. We're excited to have her join the team!

3DMD Week has Arrived!

The air’s abuzz with ideas to maximize the impact of 3DMD’s modeling kits, as consulting 3DMD Model Teachers work together with our educators. The group will continue working through the next year. We’ll look forward to sharing ideas with you in the future. Stay tuned to this newsletter for updates.

Science Spotlight

Ben Barres, PhD, was a neurobiologist at Stanford University whose research focused on the interaction between neurons and glial cells in the nervous system. Much of his early work, published under his deadname, focused on why many neurons don't survive after associating with their targets. In his later research, Barres worked on understanding cell-to-cell interaction in the developmental regulation of the nodes of Ranvier and the myelin sheath. He also continued to study glial cells in the role they play in forming new neurons during the 2010s. While Barres passed away on December 27, 2017, from pancreatic cancer, he reflected on his life before his passing by saying:

"I lived life on my terms: I wanted to switch genders, and I did. I wanted to be a scientist, and I was. I wanted to study glia, and I did that too. I stood up for what I believed in and I like to think I made an impact, or at least opened the door for the impact to occur. I have zero regrets and I’m ready to die. I’ve truly had a great life."
