Science Spotlight

Scott Keeney, PhD, is a molecular biology researcher who discovered the function of the Spo11 protein, which is responsible for making DNA double-strand breaks. He currently studies chromosomal recombination during meiotic cell division, including how it is regulated, at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Keeney and his lab continue their work on Spo11 and how it interacts with other proteins in the cell nucleus by working with yeast and mice as model organisms. By identifying the basic mechanisms underlying recombination, they can determine how the process fails in conditions such as Down syndrome and some forms of cancer.
