Create a SMART Team with your students this year. In SMART Teams, students study a protein, learning its structure and function. They then demonstrate their understanding by designing an accurate 3D-printed model of the protein. Science Spotlight
Seth S. Martin, MD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Johns Hopkins Medicine, specializing in preventive cardiology, lipids, and digital health. Dr. Martin headed a team from Johns Hopkins that developed a new LDL assessment based on blood lipid panel results. The new assessment provides a better estimate of LDL cholesterol, which is the kind that builds up on your arterial walls. JAMA Cardiology interviewed Dr. Martin, where he compares the Martin/Hopkins Estimation to the Friedewald Estimation, which has been the standard since 1972.
